Bringing a little one into the world is an incredible, transformative experience. Amidst the joy, sleepless nights, and endless messes, it's easy for new parents to overlook their own recovery – especially when it comes to their core and pelvic floor. While often downplayed, the truth is, pregnancy and childbirth place significant demands on your body, and your pelvic floor is no exception. That's where pelvic health physiotherapy comes in to get you back to your strongest self!

Think of your pelvic floor as a hammock of muscles and tissues at the base of your pelvis. It supports your organs, helps with bladder and bowel control, provides stability to your trunk, and plays a crucial role in sexual function. During pregnancy, these muscles are under increased strain from the growing uterus and hormonal changes. Then, during childbirth, they can undergo significant stretching, tearing, or even nerve damage.

Many new parents experience symptoms like:

  • Urinary leakage: A little cough or sneeze shouldn't lead to a wet patch!

  • Pelvic and low back pain: Persistent discomfort in the lower abdomen, hips, tailbone, or back.

  • Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation): A gap between your abdominal muscles that can make your belly look perpetually pregnant or appear cone-shaped as you flex.

  • Painful intercourse: Often a sign of muscle tension or scar tissue.

  • Pelvic organ prolapse: A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the vagina, where organs may have shifted downwards.

While these issues are common, they are not normal and you don't have to "just live with them." This is where a specialized pelvic health physiotherapist steps in.

What does Pelvic Health Physio for Postpartum Care Involve?

It's so much more than just Kegels! A pelvic health physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment, which typically includes:

  1. A detailed history: Discussing your pregnancy, birth experience, current symptoms, lifestyle, your pre-pregnancy life, and your goals.

  2. External assessment: Looking at your posture, breathing patterns, and how your core muscles are engaging.

  3. Internal assessment (if appropriate and with your consent): This is important for evaluating the strength, tone, and coordination of your pelvic floor muscles, as well as checking for scar tissue or prolapse.

Based on their findings, your physiotherapist will work with you as a team to personalize your treatment plan. Your treatment plan might include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle training: Learning how to properly engage and relax these muscles – which is just as important as strengthening them!

  • Manual therapy: Gentle hands-on techniques to release tight muscles, mobilize joints, and address scar tissue.

  • Core strengthening: Beyond just your abs, focusing on the deep core system that supports your entire trunk.

  • Education: Understanding how your body works, proper bladder and bowel habits, and strategies for managing symptoms in daily life.

  • Return to exercise guidance: Helping you safely and progressively get back to the activities you love, without putting undue strain on your pelvic floor.

Why is it a "Must-Have"?

Investing in pelvic health physiotherapy postpartum isn't just about addressing current symptoms; it's about long-term well-being and preventing future problems. By restoring function and addressing underlying issues, you can:

  • Regain bladder and bowel control.

  • Reduce or eliminate pelvic pain.

  • Improve core strength and stability.

  • Enhance sexual health and comfort.

  • Feel more confident and comfortable in your own body.

  • Safely return to exercise and daily activities.

When Should You See a Pelvic Health Physio?

It's generally recommended to have a check-up around 6 weeks postpartum, or whenever you feel ready. However, it's never too late! Even if your children are older, you can still benefit from addressing long-standing issues.

Your body just performed a miracle. It deserves expert care to recover and thrive. Pelvic health physiotherapy empowers you to reclaim your core, address those "unmentionable" symptoms, and truly feel like yourself again as you navigate the incredible journey of parenthood. Don't hesitate to prioritize your postpartum recovery – you deserve it!
